What is BMW Rheingold ISTA ?
ISTA is a workshop system that contains BMW AG Data and Information. ISTA stands for Integrated Service Technical Application. Way back when, during the initial development of this tool, BMW used DIS (Diagnostics Information System), and as the programs evolved and due to the nature of the file naming conventions utilized by BMW, the workshop system became known as Rheingold in the enthusiast world. Rheingold in actuality is the folder that contains the main application and data. Rheingold became ISTA-D (D stands for Diagnostics) and BMW’s programming application (not discussed in this document) used the same nomenclature, ISTA except with a P (for programming) or ISTA-P.
BMW Rheingold ISTA Functions List:
1. Module (ECU) errors reading and clearing
2. Gearbox (transmission) and engine adaptations erasing
3. Fuel injectors control, correction amount real time viewing, injector registering
4. Engine mountings testing
5. Mass air flow (MAF) testing and registering. Whole air system testing

Minimum system configuration is now hard coded into the program, although the standalone
versions have this check removed.
2.2Ghz CPU – 2 core minimum, core i5 or i7 recommended
4GB RAM, 8GB recommended
Minimum 20+GB HDD free space for ISTA+ Diagnostics with ONE language, and minimum
100GB for Programming Data.
This version has hardware check removed, however, future versions MAY not have this
feature. A faster system is required.
This version discusses included English Databases only. If more required, add to SQLiteDBs folder, which will need more space.

The BMW WDS was designed and distributed long before modern browsers were developed therefore it uses some archaic logic and functions in its operation. If you've downloaded and tried to use the many available versions of the WDS system on the Internet, you may have encountered difficulties in being able to access the actual wiring diagrams.
We have gone through and modified the entire system to work with modern browsers, and can guide you on setting up your system for the one specific component we cannot change, the Java runtime.
The original BMW WDS required:
Operating System:
- Windows 2000, XP or NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 and up
- Screen Resolution: min. 800 x 600
Original version Browser reuirements:
- Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher (up to IE8)
- JavaScript and CSS enabled
- Java enabled
When using *SUN Java Enviroment:Version 1.4.1 or higher - Scripting of Java Applets enabled
- Adobe® SVG Plugin 3.0 or higher installed However, only required for Internet Explorer 9.x or older!
With the internet version it does no matter what operating system you are running, or what platform you are operating upon. Windows, Macintosh, Linux... As long as your chosen browser supports Java properly and the Java Runtime is installed appropriate for your operating system and the browser can display SVG (Scaled Vector Graphics) then it should work. Now there are some logical limits. Display sizes less than 800 x 600 are going to be unusable so your smart phone is probably not a good choice. But tablets should be Okay if they otherwise meed the technical requirements. (Note that running Java applets it the most difficult process to enable for non-Windows tablets.)

- Internet Explorer 8 and older require the SVG Plugin. Note that it is obsolete, but so are those particular browsers.
