Seems people like the idea of changing or adding options to their vehicles. If the change or add on has anything to do electronically with the vehicle it probably will involve as built data changes.
I am going to try to give a little explanation of as built data. Ford vehicles have many electronic modules within the vehicle that all communicate with each other. The modules are programmed with what is known as As Built Data or ABD for short. Depending on what the exact module is, it can tell the car what options to enable, how to perform, etc.Ford as built data
ABD data is in the form of bits and checksums basically. You can download your vehicle ABD from this link that way you can see what I am talking about. https://www.motorcraftservice.com/vdirs ... nomenu=yes
I have spent many hours examining as built data and figured some things out. You also have to have the Ford VCM/VCM2 and IDS programming software to access the ABD in you car.
As an example a member wanted to consider adding a heated steering wheel to his 2013 Taurus. If the wiring exists or can be added you would have to change out the steering wheel add the heated steering wheel module and then modify as built data for the instrument cluster if the car has remote start and modify the as built data in the APIM as the only way to manually turn on the heated steering wheel is through touching the heated steering wheel icon on the MFT (MyFord Touch) display). The APIM is the only module that the ABD can NOT be manually entered....why, probably because one could add expensive options such as navigation then.

Some things that can be done by modifying as built data; enabling keyless entry on police interceptor Sedans and SUVs, adding the abilitity to turn off advance trac on SHO models without the performance package, stuff like that.

I may have confused more people now who knows.
Basically get the car with the things you want as you probably won't be able to add it in later.
